Bathroom Fixtures

Forget About Ever Hiring a Plumber!
Why pay someone else, when you can Do it Yourself. Quick Step by Step guides to your everyday problems. It's only once a month.

When planning a bathroom, accessibility over time is the key to a successful design.  The accesses to all bathroom fixtures, for example, should be as reachable as those in a kitchen, and recommended clearances will vary depending on the shape of the room.  In fact, plumbing a bathroom can be very complicated given the usual space constraints.

For example the door leading into the bathroom should swing freely and be at least 36 inches from the nearest opposing wall. The toilet or bidet area should have at least a 30” span, or 15 inches” allowed from the centerline to either a sink or wall on either side. In fact the 15 inch rule applies to the sink and the bath tub.

And if the toilet or bidet is directly opposite a sink, 24 inches is the standard. All drain and vent pipes must conform to a standard as well. The floor drain for a toilet must be no less than 4 inches in diameter, and for a sink or shower must have no less than a 2 inch drain.  The water supply line fixtures should be sized at least ¾ inch, and the sink no less than ½ inch.

On a sink where the hot and cold water comes in, the shutoff valves should be at least 19” above the floor and 8-10 inches apart. For the toilet, the water inlet fixture should be 8” above the floor to allow clearance between the supply hose and the bottom of the tank. The bathtub water supply lines should be 28 inches from the floor and the shower head arm fixture 76 inches from the floor and 6 inches from the top edge of the shower basin. Finally, venting all the drains is extremely important. A 2-inch vent pipe is standard for a toilet or a bidet, a shower and a small sink, but they should all lead in to a 4-inch main stack that goes out the roof.
