Forget About Ever Hiring a Plumber!
Why pay someone else, when you can Do it Yourself. Quick Step by Step guides to your everyday problems. It's only once a month.

Bathtubs and showers sustain heavy use in most homes, and to no surprise they do wear out. After years of scouring and buildup of water sediments, replacement may be the best option.  On the other hand if your bathtub is chipped or merely unsightly, there is the option of refinishing it or “lining” that many companies specialize in these days. The latter process involves precise measuring of the bathtub by a professional, and an exact mold is cast and glued into the existing tub’s contour.  These inserts can be quite attractive, and definitely preferable to the expense of replacing a bathtub altogether.

Bathtubs come in a myriad of sizes and shapes depending on tastes and perhaps cultural preferences. In general, acrylic and fiberglass tubs are the least expensive, lightest in weight, easiest to install with high durability.  The problem with this type is that the surfaces become dull over time.  Then there is the enameled steel version bathtub which has a sturdier finish, but lacks insulating properties - a factor that allows the water in it to cool more quickly.  The highest quality bathtubs by far are enameled cast iron. They are the most expensive and heaviest in construction, but may prove to be well worth it because the gleaming finish can be retained for decades. It fills more quietly, and the water stays warm the longest.

If the decision is made to remove an old tub and add a new, larger version, it would be wise to check local ordinances to make sure whether fixture replacement requires a visit from the local building inspector. If it is a major rebuild, there will likely need to be a permit issued, and final inspection conducted.

For the do-it-yourselfer it is important to point out that replacing an entire bathtub is a large chore. Inventory your skills. In most cases carpentry, and masonry as well as plumbing skills are required.
