Pipe Camera Inspection System
|
A Pipe Camera is one of the most useful plumbing tools to have in your possession. Being able to
see the inside of a pipe system is, of course, the perfect thing for working out where the blockage
is or where the leak is or whether the pipe is in need of maintenance or replacement. Pipe cameras
basically can be one of three normal designs and we offer reviews on a number of different pipe
cameras of three designs.
When attempts to discover the source of water loss, poor drainage, or severe clogging fail,
sometimes the best answer involves the use of a pipe camera probe. With this method a lighted
camera is pushed down the drain pipe allowing the operator to view a great deal about a drain that
would otherwise only be evident after a costly dismantling process.

The technology has been around for several years, and drain cameras can cost as little as
$300 or as much as $5000 depending on the reel capacity, camera resolution/sensitivity, operating temperature, and
a host of other features. If plumbing is your livelihood, it may already be standard equipment. If your home
is located in a remote area, and you are on a septic system, it might be beneficial to have such a device in your
tool inventory. Keep in mind, though, that these types of devices are highly specialized. So before purchasing one,
do your research first.
In large buildings or wherever the drainage systems are complex and highly convoluted, often
a pipe inspection camera is mandatory. And once a problem is diagnosed the use of special powered augers and
sometimes water jetting equipment is required. One of the best and least expensive pipe camera systems on the
market is made by a company aptly named Mini Cam Inspection Systems. Their Model SWJ 2188 is a simple, compact and
practical unit that provides the user with clear black and white images, 65 to 100 feet of cable, and all the
accessories for the do-it-yourself enthusiast.
This unit is available for around $400, and with a 1/8 inch push cable video kit, and 2 inch
to 6 inch pipe range accommodation, is suitable for the majority of residential locations. There is nothing that
says your usage of it is limited to plumbing issues. It could also be used in heating ducts or any conduit as long
you stay within the size and operating temperature range of the video probe.
